What It Feels Like to Be Seen in a Pilates Class

There’s a difference between being in a Pilates class and feeling like your instructor is actually teaching you.

At The Core Reformery Pilates Singapore, we believe good Pilates is personal. Your instructor isn’t just demonstrating exercises and leaving you to follow along. We’re watching how you move, noticing the little things and getting to know your body over time.

Because when you feel seen in class, you can stop wondering whether you’re doing it right and start understanding your body better.

You don’t have to explain your body all over again

Maybe you have an old knee injury. Maybe your lower back tends to take over when you’re tired. Perhaps there was an exercise you struggled with in your last class.

A good instructor remembers.

It means you don’t have to start from zero every time you walk through the door. We get to know how you move, what you’re working on and where you might need a little more attention.

For clients who need more individual support, particularly when working with an injury, during pregnancy or when returning to movement, our Private Pilates sessions allow us to work with your body one-on-one.

One small adjustment can change how an exercise feels

Sometimes you’re doing everything you think you should be doing, but the exercise just doesn’t feel quite right.

A slight change to your foot placement. A reminder to soften your shoulders. A different cue to help you connect to the movement.

And suddenly, you feel what you’re meant to feel.

That attention to detail is a big part of how we teach at TCR. Pilates isn’t about simply completing an exercise. We want you to understand what you’re doing, why you’re doing it and how it should feel in your body.

You have another option when your body needs one

Your body isn’t exactly the same every time you come to class.

Some days you feel strong. Some days something feels a little off. An exercise that felt great last week might not work for you today.

That doesn’t mean you’ve failed the exercise.

Your instructor can give you another exercise option, change the resistance or adjust the movement so you can keep moving with purpose.

If you’re completely new to Pilates, our Guide for First Timers walks you through where to begin and what to expect when you arrive.

You’re challenged when you’re ready for more

Being seen isn’t only about corrections and modifications.

It’s also having an instructor notice that something has changed.

You’re stronger. Your control has improved. The exercise that once took all your concentration now feels familiar.

So we give you more.

Maybe that means a progression. A different spring. A more challenging variation. Or moving from a foundational class such as Align into one of our intermediate classes.

Our Group Class guide maps out how our classes progress, from building your foundations to exploring more challenging movements and different Pilates apparatus.

The goal isn’t to make every exercise harder. It’s to give you the right challenge at the right time.

There’s a reason attention matters in a Pilates class

Pilates asks for precision, control and awareness. And that’s difficult to teach if no one is really watching how you move.

Research into group exercise has found a relationship between class size and how participants experience their instructor. In one study examining 47 exercise classes ranging from 5 to 46 participants, perceptions of the instructor became less positive as class size increased.

It wasn’t a Pilates-specific study, and class size alone doesn’t determine the quality of an instructor. But it supports something we’ve believed for a long time: having the opportunity for meaningful interaction and individual attention matters.

It’s one of the reasons we deliberately keep our group classes small.

We’ve written more about this in The Benefits of Small Group Pilates Classes in Singapore, including how smaller classes create more opportunities for individual feedback, modifications and progressions.

But a small class alone isn’t enough.

It’s not only about being in a small class

Five people in a room doesn’t automatically mean five people are being taught well.

For us, being seen means having an instructor who knows what they’re looking for.

Someone who notices when your pelvis shifts. When your shoulders start doing the work. When you’ve found a way around an exercise instead of through it.

Someone who remembers what you struggled with last week and notices when you no longer struggle with it.

Someone who knows when to give you another option and when you’re capable of more.

That’s the difference between simply following a Pilates class and being taught.

And that’s what we want those 50 minutes at TCR to feel like.

Personal. Precise. Intentional.
