How to Know When You're Ready to Level Up in Pilates

One of the most common questions we hear at The Core Reformery is: “Am I ready to try a harder class?” It’s a good question — and the answer isn’t always about how long you’ve been practising.

Progression in Pilates isn’t linear, and it doesn’t look the same for everyone. But there are clear signs that your body and mind are ready for more — and a clear pathway to get there.

It Starts at the Beginning — No Matter What

Whether you’re brand new to Pilates or returning after a long break, every journey at The Core Reformery begins in the same place: the foundations.

Our beginner classes — Align, Elongate, and Mat Flow — aren’t just a starting point. They’re where the real work happens. You learn how to breathe with movement, how to engage the right muscles, and how to feel the difference between moving correctly and simply going through the motions.

Most importantly, Align serves as the prerequisite for all our intermediate classes — and for good reason. Without a solid foundation, advancing too quickly leads to poor form, compensation patterns, and often, injury.

Signs You’re Ready to Progress

You don’t need anyone to tell you when you’re ready — your body usually signals it first. Here’s what to look out for:

You move without thinking about the equipment

In your early classes, a lot of mental energy goes toward the reformer itself — the springs, the footbar, the carriage. When the equipment feels intuitive, you free up your focus for what actually matters: the quality of your movement.

You can feel where the movement should be

One of the hallmarks of a developing Pilates practice is proprioception — knowing where your body is in space, and feeling exercises in the intended muscle groups. When you stop just doing the movement and start feeling it, you’re ready for more complexity.

Your instructor says you’re ready

At The Core Reformery, our instructors track your progress across every session. We’ll tell you when we think you’re ready to explore the next level — and point you toward the class that makes the most sense for where you are.

The Progression Pathway at The Core Reformery

Our class structure is designed to grow with you. Here’s how it maps out:

Beginner — Start Here

Attend Align, Elongate, Mat Flow. Learn how your body moves, build your foundations, and understand the principles behind every exercise. No Pilates experience required.

Intermediate — Level Up

Attend Signature, Flex. You know how your body moves — now challenge it. More complex sequences, varied apparatus, and a deeper connection to your practice. Requires at least 5 Align classes.

Advanced — Go Deeper

Attend Sweat, Core. Precision, intensity, and full-body control. For confident movers with strong core awareness and consistent Pilates experience. Requires at least 6 Align or 3 Signature classes.

Progress Looks Different for Everyone

Some clients move from Align to Signature in a matter of weeks. Others spend months in beginner classes — not because they’re not improving, but because they’re finding depth and nuance in the foundations that keeps challenging them.

Both are completely valid. The goal at The Core Reformery isn’t to get you to advanced classes as quickly as possible. It’s to build a practice that’s sustainable, safe, and genuinely yours.
