So, you’ve signed up for your first Reformer Pilates class in Singapore—exciting! Whether you’re transitioning from mat Pilates or are entirely new to the practice, stepping onto the Pilates reformer for the first time can feel both thrilling and a little intimidating.

At The Core Reformery, we welcome everybody to experience the benefits of Reformer Pilates, and we want you to feel comfortable and confident as you begin your movement journey. To help, here are five essential tips to make the most of your first class.

1. Arrive Early & Get Familiar with the Reformer

The Pilates reformer might look like a complex machine, but it’s actually a versatile piece of equipment designed to support and challenge movement through controlled resistance. Arriving 5 minutes early allows you to:

✅ Settle in and meet your instructor

✅ Get a quick rundown on how the reformer works

✅ Ask any questions before class starts

Our instructors always guide first-timers through basic adjustments, ensuring you feel at ease before beginning your session.

2. Wear the Right Gear (Yes, Grip Socks!)

For a safe and effective workout, wearing the right attire is key. Here’s what we recommend:

👕 Fitted, comfortable activewear

🧦 Grip socks for stability and hygiene (we require them in all classes!)

💧 Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated

Not sure where to get grip socks? We’ve got them available for purchase at $28 each at our studio.

3. Engage Your Core & Control Your Movements

Unlike high-impact workouts, Reformer Pilates focuses on slow, controlled movements to build core strength, flexibility, and stability. Instead of rushing through exercises, concentrate on:

💡 Engaging your core—think of pulling your belly button towards your spine

💡 Breathing deeply—inhale to prepare, exhale as you move

💡 Moving with control—slower movements challenge muscles more than fast ones

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Modify

As a beginner, some movements may feel challenging at first—and that’s okay! Our instructors at The Core Reformery are here to guide you and offer modifications to suit your level.

🔹 Need more support? Use lighter springs.

🔹 Feeling strong? Ask for more resistance or take on an advanced variation.

🔹 Struggling with an exercise? Let your instructor know—we’re here to help!

Every Pilates journey is unique, and progress comes with consistency.

5. Be Patient & Enjoy the Process

Pilates is a practice, not a performance. Like anything new, it takes time to build strength, coordination, and confidence on the machine. Stick with it, and you’ll soon notice:

Improved posture

Better core strength

Increased flexibility

A deeper mind-body connection

We celebrate every step of your movement journey—no matter where you start.
